HOW IS SLOVAK FREESTYLE TEAM GETTING READY FOR THE UPCOMING WINTER SEASON?

With the summer at its end and the first FIS WC in New Zealand already behind us, I asked members of Slovak Freestyle Team how they are getting ready and what they do for the upcoming winter season.

Guys in Slovak Strength Institute will carry you if you can't walk after proper workout ;) .

PAVOL 'PAJO' KURIC

Pajo is preparing himself in quite a specific way. ''I have attended the courses of Muay Thai (Thai boxing), as I do this for some time already.'' Most importantly, Pajo was recovering from the injury of two broken vertebras. He said, he was also working on dismissing the block a person can have after such a harm.
Yet the youngest member of Slovak freestyle team keeps thinking positive: ''I was focusing to get back into the shape I had before. I think I reached that point again and I am looking forward to jump on the skis!''

KATARÍNA 'KATKA' MASAROVIČOVÁ

,,I had started my summer with crossfit trainings. It helps me to improve my movements as well as the strength.'' However, venomous illness slowed her down. ''I missed the proper trainings at BigAir and also at Line36.'' When she couldn't train on the skis, at least she tried some surfing. ,,I did a river surfing in Čuňovo and I spent two weeks surfing in France. In the autumn I will do the crossfit again and I plan to jump in Line36 as well.''

IGOR 'IČI' JANCKULÍK

Igor is well known for his love for lifting the iron. That's why he spent the most time in the fitness among all the team probably. As he sais, ''I will grind the obstacles into the ground in the winter :).''

For other kind of preparation, Igor prefer aggressive inline skating in a new skatepark in Námestovo and you can find him jumping at new training centre Line36 which was opened in Bratislava. ''Line36 is brilliant possibility to train your tricks, because the risk here is way smaller than anywhere on the snow. I am looking forward for Dachstein opening, I will try there everything I have learned.''

Jumping in Line36.

RICHARD 'RICHIE' JUREČKA

,,I was thinking about going to Swiss in the summer, but some circumstances kept me at home and I spent most of my time in the gym and at BigAir.''
Jumping into the water belongs to the most popular way for freeskiers how to learn and practice new tricks on the skis. Richie was able to learn several new tricks and he was able to showcase them already at Czech water ramp event KromWars in the end of August. He attended the competition as the only Slovak.

Richie at KromWars

Richie, as well as Igor, does aggressive inline skating, which together with slackline supports the balance and orientation, for instance on the rails. ''I also like to bike in the nature or go for a run. It is really good way to clean my head too.''
At autumn, Richie will appear in a new freeski movie eXcelent Separation from Czech movie production Separation Films. You can watch the trailer here:

NATÁLIA 'NANA' ŠLEPECKÁ

Besides the work, Nana spent most of her time in the gym, on the slackline or doing aggressive inline skating.

Nana trains in Slovak Strength Institute in Bratislava, where are the best specialists for training (not only top) athletes. These guys create the professional training schedules adjusted for each athlete. It is combined together with suitable diet and nutritional supplements of high quality.
Also Nana train her tricks on the water ramp at BigAir.

ZUZANA 'ZUZIČKA' STROMKOVÁ

Zuzička like to spent her summer outside. ''I prefer to be outside rather than in the gym, so I like summer outdoor sports more.'' On the other hand, this doesn't mean she is not getting ready for the winter in the gym. She, as well as Nana, is training in Slovak Strength Institute in Bratislava.

Zuzi was also one of the organizers of Move UP Camp. ''We organize this 'sport and english' camp together with Štepánka Lučanová, coach for ski and flexibility and also Janka Kusá, the English teacher. There were kids who were sporting and also who were not sporting so much, but they all wanted to learn something new or get ready for the winter. I was really stoked to see all the kids happy and satisfied when leaving the camp. We already plan the second camp in October on Stubai glacier.''
To fulfill her summer preparation she bikes in Tatras, where she is at home, surf and attends summer ski competitions if possible.

KROM WARS 2015

Let's hit the water!

Krom Wars ended up the summer in a big, big style. The event returned on the swimming pool in Hulín (Czech rep.) after one year break.

Bluebird and riders from all around the Europe promised some serious show. As people slowly entered the area around lunch time, the program started with jumping from the tower, trampoline exhibition, slack-line possibility or wakeboard exhibition by guys from Zabil.cz.

Wakeboard jump and Horác's fan club.

Zabil rock and roll.

Than the qualification had started. All together 23 riders from 9 European countries (CZE, SVK, SUI, AUT, SLO, GER, SWE, FRA and POL) were divided into 2 heats. From each group the best 6 riders made it over to the finals. There were three judges, Pepé Kalenský (CZE), Richard Skála (CZE) and Bartek Sibiga (POL).

Judges.
Bartek protecting his papers from judging :).

The first group offered interesting mix of riders and tricks. It was opened by Šimon Šimba Bartík (CZE) with cork 5, than Dan Hanka (CZE) sent there double cork 12, Honza Ferbr (CZE) from Czech junior team did double cork 10. They were followed by Migi Reibenschuh (SUI) and Max Meunier (FRA). Radek Palkoska, also member of Czech junior team, jumped 7 truck driver. Ondra Beneš did as the first trick flat 5 and Thomas Trifonitchev (GER) cork 9 tail. In the first group were introduced also Dennis Ranalter (AT), Szczepan Karpiel (POL) and Ben Winkler (AT).
Doubles and rotations with all different grabs were simply massive.

Slovenian rider Matic Lovko ready to jump.

After first hour and 5 minutes break, where everybody jumped into the water, group no.2 started.
It was opened by Sam Baumgartner (AT) followed by Richie Jurečka with cork 5 screaming seamen. Trainer of Czech Junior Team Michal Peč and Vojta Břeský were there as well. Matic Lovko (SLO) enjoyed his unusual frontflip tail. Group no.2 included Dan Koudelka (CZE), Roman Daly Dalecký (CZE) and another hope of Czech freeskiing, Tomáš Peč, together with winner of Krom Wars 2013 Martin Horák (CZE), Jens Nystrom (SWE) and Christian Jenny (AT). We saw some sw double from Sam Baumgartner, sw cork 5 from Matic lovko or several kangaroo flips.
From time to time judges didn’t hesitate to jump into the water as well, because the temperatures and level of riding were really high.

The riders were drawing the numbers from the hat and according to the number they were put into the table.

This is how the six couples competing against each other in the finals were made. It was from Austria Dennis Ranalter (winner of qualification) and Christian Jenny, Sam Baugartner and Szczepan Karpiel, Tomáš Peč and Thomas Trichonitchev, Migi Reibenschuh (SUI) and Dan Hanka (CZE), Vojta Břeský and Ondra Beneš, Matic lovko and Martin Horák.
The only Slovak and my bro Richie didn’t made it into the finals in a strong competition, but I am sure he prove himself with the tricks he landed.

Richie's flat 9.
Judging was not easy for sure as the ,fighting’ was quite equal. The atmosphere was great, riders didn’t hesitate to support each other. From 12 riders, a lot of kangaroo flips and double corks, 6 riders continued to fight for the win. It was Dennis Ranalter with rodeo 5 shifty and kangaroo before Sam Baumgartner, Tomáš Peč with cork 5 truck driver and kangaroo japan before Dan Hanka, Martin Horák with 9blunt and double cork 12 before Ondra Beneš.
The superfinals were huge! It was about doubles most of the time. As the first trick, everybody jumped kangaroo flip, than double corks and double back flip from Dennis Ranalter. Meanwhile, the father of the event Jirka Volák jumped as well the awesome rightside kangaroo flip and rodeo bow and arrow.
The last runs Horác nailed it with unbelievable 9 double tail. But than something incredible happen as jung Tomáš Peč did triple back flip!! It was the first tripple in CZ. Wuaa!!! It is hard to describe what happened next. Pečák didn’t even climb out of the swimming pool, some people jumped in to give hime hi5 immediately … Incredible :).

We quickly move to the podium where Jirka said his honest ,,Děkuju’’ (Thank you) and we were waiting for the final results.

Results

The judges decided:
1. Martin horák
2. Dennis Ranalter
3. Tomáš Peč

Afterparty was not so far away taking place in city Kroměříž. It was not only about the concert of rappers Vladimír 518 and Mike Trafik, but also the first premier of trailer for the Czech freeski movie eXcelent Separation from Separation Films. The premiers of the movie will be in Czech as well as Slovakia and it is something you don’t want to miss! Stay tuned for more info :).

Jirka :D.

In the end, I would like to say HUGE congratulation to Jirka for this amazing and fresh event. I really hope to meet everyone around this time next year!

EUROPEAN CUP IN VOGEL, SLOVENIA

My first FIS competition took place in Slovenia, in ski resort Vogel at March 20th-21th 2015. There were two competitions.

Slovak team in Vogel, only Vajda is missing.
We were traveling from Bratislava with Murgi, the trainer. There was also Natalia Slepecka, Viliam Vajda Tomo, Igor Jancklulik and me. It took us not so long to get to the spot. The accommodation was in the valley, to the skiing area we were taken by the Funifor.

The ski centre lies in Triglav National Park and is more than 50 years old as it was opened in 1964.

The get to the ski resort you first need to take a cable cabin.
The view of the mountains and the Bohinjsko jezero (Lake Bohinj) is amazing.

The first European Cup was at Friday March 20th. The weather was perfect. All together we had 3 runs to prove ourselves in snowpark which consisted of rail, bigger and smaller kicker and rail platform.

With my switch in the rail, left 360 safety, right 180 safety, sw in 27 out from a box I got 47,67 points I ended up at 5th place. Unfortunately, the last run I landed badly on the last small stupid kicker and there was something wrong with my knee.

Czech, Polish and Slovak freeskiers.

The second day I didn't feel so much better after the previous crash, so I didn't start. Damn it. Also the windy and cloudy weather made the competition way harder and.

In the end I ended at the 15th place in overall ranking of European Cup. It made me really happy and I hope I can keep going after my small-big injury.

The mountain's panorama was beautiful!
